Concert Band is a club in which a group of committed musicians gather every Thursday to have fun and rehearse music. Some of the musicians play a variety of woodwinds such as, flutes, clarinets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, and bass clarinets, while others play brass instruments like trumpets and baritones; drums and double basses are played as well.
“Rehearsing with them is the highlight of my week because I can guarantee laughing but also experiencing the joy of making music together,“ said Ms. Umachandran, the teacher running Concert Band. When asked, she said that the purpose of the club was to get a group of cool people to gather and do something that makes them feel good, create a sense of belonging, and to improve their instrument skills.
Now, from the students’ point of view, the feelings seem to be mutual. “I am Ms. Uma’s number one fan,” a concert band member, who wished to remain anonymous, said in an interview. Another musician replied, “No, I am,” and a third member retorted, “I was literally a Ms. Uma fan before either of you were born.” Alas, Ms. Umachandran’s true number one fan may never be uncovered. Thus, it is known throughout the club that Ms. Umachandran is a great teacher to run the club.
“I like how Ms. U makes band enjoyable with her lighthearted jokes and funny atmosphere, since it eases our tension and gives us a positive space to improve our playing,” stated one concert band member. “The way she conducts is very precise and is the main catalyst for the band's great performance,” complimented another. “I love the conducting performed by Ms. Uma.” Many others agreed that the Concert Band would not be the same without her.
This club provides many great opportunities to its members. The band gives students a chance to improve their skills with their instruments, by performing in school musical acts, and even going to Canada’s Wonderland to perform.
