The North Star is a dedicated group of students and teachers who are passionate about writing for our school community. They meet after school every Thursday from the end of school until four o’clock to write outstanding and creative articles about various topics.
This club has various stories stemming from the school’s exciting sports events to articles voicing student opinions. For example, there are sections for sports, profiles on students, staff and clubs, opinions, and also general news stories about events.
Mr. Chagani is the head and one of the founders of the North Star. When asked about how it began, he said, “Ms. Johnston and I started the North Star in 2023. I ran a newspaper club (and journalism course) at previous schools and thought it would be a great idea to start one here. Our goal was to foster a stronger sense of community and improve school culture.” This goal was very much completed, and our school culture is very strong and closer. Another question we asked was what he enjoyed about the club; he replied, "I really appreciate the enthusiasm students have for the club. Unlike teaching courses, students are not required to attend this club. It's entirely voluntary. So you really get a sense of students' interests and passions. I also enjoy seeing them have fun and socialize while they learn new skills (interpersonal/leadership/academic).”
The club is filled with aspiring writers who want to document the events of the school community. One of the writers is Japji Sandhu. When asked why we should read the paper, she says, “I recommend people should read the North Star because it keeps you informed of all school events, and additionally, writers for the North Star spend time researching and writing about various other topics like social issues, which can educate you, improve your critical thinking, or give you a different point of view. Bring back reading.”
Another writer and the Design Editor Thu Le also answered the following questions. When asked about why she enjoys this club, she responded, “I enjoy the newspaper club because of the people I’ve got to meet through it. Everyone is so fun to be around while making an environment that doesn’t feel judgmental, where you feel like you can just write or share any ideas without having to worry. I also really like the creative freedom you're able to have; you can honestly do anything you want, from serious political topics, general school news, or just dumb south star Peppa Pig poems. Additionally, you can also creatively use other media to contribute to the club through graphic design, photography, and art. I love how open it is."
Overall, the North Star is a serious, fun, and dedicated club focused on documenting our school culture, community, and our skills. This club is filled with dedicated students and teachers all working to a common goal of telling stories to our wonderful school.
